Trio Corrente

Trio Corrente Live on Oh! Jazz

Grammy Award Winner - Best Latin Jazz Album

  • Formed in 2001 by the union of drummer Edu Ribeiro, pianist Fabio Torres and bassist Paulo Paulelli, Trio Corrente has been creating an original sound, interpreting in a unique way the classics of choro, MPB and its growing authorial repertoire. In the Trio's performances, virtuosic solos and moments of rare subtlety combine in a pleasant balance.

When they recorded their first album, Corrente , in 2005, in a brief afternoon in the drummer's rehearsal studio, none of the members of the Trio expected the full path they would end up taking. As if occupying a vacant space in the current Brazilian instrumental scene, they ended up becoming a reference among musicians and music lovers.

Since the first concerts, the group has been gathering an ever-increasing number of followers, formed not only by jazz and choro lovers but also by the general public. Few Brazilian jazz groups have achieved such prominence on the national and international circuit.

In 2011, Trio Corrente recorded its second album, Volume 2 , and in 2014, the album Song For Maura , a partnership with Paquito D'Rivera, won the Grammy Award for best Latin jazz album. For the same work, they would still win, in the same category, the Latin Grammy, sharing the prize with the legendary American pianist Chick Corea.

In 2016 they released their new album, Volume 3 . Most of the compositions are by renowned artists such as Jobim and Pixinguinha, including Djavan, Caymmi and Chico Buarque. In addition to the classics, the group presents original compositions by the three members.

There were numerous invitations and collaborations that the Trio carried out during its trajectory. In 2018, the partnership with Orquestra Jazz Sinfônica de São Paulo resulted in the recording of a live album, released in 2018. In 2019 they also perform with the String Quartet of the City of São Paulo.

They performed dozens of tours in Europe, Japan, the United States and Latin America, in one of which, in 2018, they recorded the CD Tem que ser Azul , released in Brazil and Europe in 2019. The work was praised by figures such as the great bassist of jazz, Ron Carte.

In 2020, Trio Corrente, like artists around the world, saw their commitments canceled due to the pandemic. Even so, they celebrated their 20 years of career in a concert broadcast by Sesc Instrumental, among several other shows without an audience. During this time they wrote new compositions and arrangements and, at the end of 2021, they released their 7th album, Sincronia . The new work remains faithful to the aesthetics of the group that delights audiences all over the world: a mixture of Brazilian harmonies and rhythms with the freedom and improvisation of Jazz.
