About the show

Soojin Park - Drums

Experience a night of masterful musicianship as The Paul Thompson Trio celebrates the iconic bass, sax, and drums trio format, showcasing some of the most celebrated music in jazz history. In this special performance, the trio pays homage to two legendary saxophonists who defined the chordless trio sound.

Set One dives into the groundbreaking work of Sonny Rollins, featuring selections from his legendary repertoire, including his landmark 1958 multi-movement composition, The Freedom Suite. Rollins' revolutionary approach to the chordless trio and his soaring saxophone lines come alive in this tribute to his artistry.

The celebration continues in the second set with a spotlight on another titan of the trio format, Joe Henderson. From the meditative Serenity to the mesmerizing Black Narcissus and beyond, the trio captures the innovation and depth of Henderson’s iconic music.

Led by bassist Paul Thompson, a 30-year veteran of the jazz scene, this performance is a masterclass in musicianship. Thompson's illustrious career includes touring and recording with legends like Maynard Ferguson and Stanley Turrentine, as well as recent collaborations with Hubert Laws, Michael Feinstein, the Pittsburgh Symphony Pops, and Bob James. A cornerstone of Pittsburgh's jazz community, Paul is also a dedicated educator, teaching Jazz Bass at Duquesne University and West Virginia University, and mentoring young musicians at Pittsburgh CAPA.
