David Negrete

  • David Negrete was born in 1984 in Long Beach, California. At an early age his mother taught him to play the piano. Soon he picked up the flute, and by high school graduation his main instrument became the alto saxophone.

As a teenager, David lived in San Diego and learned about jazz from legendary bebop master Charles McPherson, and he was mentored by producer Kamau Kenyatta (Gregory Porter) and trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos (Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra).

In 2004 David was awarded a full tuition scholarship to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. There he studied with masters like Terri Lyne Carrington, George Garzone, Tiger Okoshi and Hal Crook. The young saxophonist graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree and then lived in New York City to get more experience in the modern music industry.

In 2011 David made a pivotal change by moving to Japan. In just a short time he was established as a strong voice in the music scene. In 2016 he released his first CD, [Tribe Of D] under Apollo Sounds Label.

The hard working sax player, also composer & arranger, has collaborated with Tokyo Blue Note (David Foster, Brian McKnight) as well as performed with Junko Onishi, MISIA, Chris Hart. David continues to perform in a wide range of genres and bands.
