  • Known as "the sculptor of the wind", Cariocan musician Carlos Malta is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, arrenger and educator: a wind master who dominates all kinds of saxophones and flutes. An artist with a completely original and stricking style, his work emphasizes plurality and brings a unique Brazilian accent, present in all his work.     Carlos Malta performs in the main instrumental music scenes on the planet. As a lead band he performed in China, France, Switzerland, England, Portugal, United States, Germany, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, South Africa, Morocco, Japan, Venezuela, Dominican Republic and in Cuba. His career has been plural, with special appearances in concerts by Edu Lobo, Dave Matthews Band, Snarky Puppy, Michel Legrand, Bob Mc Ferryn, Chucho Valdéz, Roberto Carlos & Caetano Veloso in the tribute to Tom Jobim, among many others.

    The original voice from Brazil, blowing from bass clarinet to piccolo flute:, o “Escultor do Vento” (A Sculptor of the Wind), is Malta’s code-name .

    A respected bandleader, arranger, composer, multi-instrumentalist and educator, Malta is one of the most inspiring musicians in Brazil nowadays.

    The Bandleader

    Carlos Malta created several projects, using different instrumental formations.

    Pife Muderno is sextet (2 flutes/ethnic bamboo flutes+4 percussions) that builds the bridge between the tradition and the modern Brazilian folks.

    The Coreto Urbano ( a ten piece band with tuba, bass-trombone , trombone , euphonium , trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, 3 percussionists); the Pimenta quartet (acc. bass, acc. 6/12 guitars, drums, sax and flute); Pixinguinha Alma e Corpo string quartet: plus very special duets with cello, double bass, guitar and piano make Malta's universe of music a great source of sounds.His concerts have been pointed out as outstanding, gifted and highlight events.

    The Multi-instrumentalist.

    A virtuoso flutist, saxophonist, Carlos Malta plays Brazilian bamboo flutes, bass flute, soprano and piccolo flute, soprano sax, alto, tenor, baritone sax and bass clarinet superbly. His name can be found in the greatest records of Brazilian music stars, and sound tracks of movies and soap operas. Furthermore Malta is a specialist in Brazilian classical music for saxophone and flute, performing with orchestras and chamber music ensembles as well.

    Arranger and Composer

    Carlos Malta is self-educated, and by learning by himself he developed new ways to arrange for all kinds of groups. His knowledge about wind instruments makes him a great musical painter,a sculptor of sounds, bringing original colors to the sound.The newest releases of Gal Costa and Ivan Lins contain his arrangements.His compositions have been recorded on his CDs "Escultor do Vento" , "Pife Muderno"-finalist Grammy 2000 ," Pixinguinha Alma e Corpo" and "Pimenta" following an intuitive field of emotion, surprises with new phrasing, rhythms, harmonies and melodies inspired in his rich musical legacy. His "Rapsody for the Carioca Rocks", composition commissioned by the Petrobras Sinfonica Orchestra, was acclaimed on its premiere at the Theatro Municipal do Rio.

    The Educator

    Carlos Malta has been affiliated with schools of music like the Royal Conservatory of Music ( Aarhus/Denmark), Escola de Musica de Brasilia, UNI-Rio, Conservatorio de Curitiba, University Saint-Denis (Paris), University of New Orleans, University Sowthern Mississippi, New Orleans Center of Creative Arts (NOCCA), in which he has been as guest artist in residence, or master-classes and workshops. His classes from him are more and more appreciated, because the are full of information about his intuitive and instantaneous music from him, composed during his classes.

    The Performer

    Professional musician since he was 18 years of age, playing with musicians such as: Hermeto Pascoal, for 12 years, Gilberto Gil for 6 years, and many others, Carlos Malta has a long list of Jazz Festivals such as: North Sea, Montreux, Montreal, Paris, Berlin, Juan-les-Pins, Cannes, Pori. He performed at the great temples of music like: Theater de la Ville (Paris), Philharmonic Hall (Cologne), Friends of Music Hall (Athens), Radio Concert Hall (Copenhagen), Teatro Municipal (Rio de Janeiro), and on his passport the stamps of more than 30 tours around the globe,

    Malta has won a New Orleans following with his brilliant live performances at Heritage Jazz Festival, Sábath Tókyo(Japan), Mogale City (South Africa),Festival de Amien (France),Fifres de Garonne and Cité de La Musique (France), Festival de Essaouira (Morocco), Brazil in Caracas (Venezuela), hearing him recongnition in several music wirters' year-end wrap-ups of the best shows. Lately, Malta is doing a Tribute for Bird, performing Charlie Parker's solos, widely opening his musical reach from him. Malta performed with Chucho Valdéz and Michel Legrand during the Jazz Plaza Festival in Havana –Cuba.

    In 2011 Carlos Malta & Pife Muderno performed in China, and a live recording of this concert is about to be released. In 2012 they went to New York to perform at the Carnegie Hall.
